In 1924 George Gershwin wrote his Musical, ” Lady Be Good..”. Art Deco Architecture was very popular in South Africa During the 1920’s & 1930’s (see Springs Hotel below). The music for this video is a medley of the songs from the show recorded at a live concert by The Apple Green Orchestra in a Concert as part of the Johannesburg International Mozart Festival in January 2020.

Adagio in G Minor is a composition attributed to Tomaso Albinoni. Widely familiar through its frequent use in film scores, the work is slow of pace, solemn of mood, and frequently transcribed for various combinations of instruments. Here it is played by the Apple Green Orchestra at St Francis, Parkview. (Link will be available soon.)

The Apple Green Orchestra plays Darius Milhaud’s , “Saudades do Brasil”, Opus 67 No 3, in a live concert at St Francis Church, Parkview, Johannesburg.

Darius Milhaud

The images of South Africa’s trees in the video are accompanied by members of the Apple Green Orchestra playing a movement from Darius Milhaud’s “Saudades di Brasil”, written in 1920. Darius Mihaud was a “modernist” composer, who experimented with melody that didn’t have to accommodate other instruments playing at the same time. The Apple Green Orchestra played the piece at a live concert as part of the Johannesburg International Mozart Festival, 2020. The Orchestra was led by Camelia Onea, and directed by Tim Roberts. The music was recorded by Nicholas Horsten.

The Apple Green Orchestra plays “Shepherd’s Hey” by Percy Grainger. The piece, based on an English folk tune, was arranged for different groups by Grainger throughout his life. This live recording is from the 2020 Johannesburg International Mozart Festival.
