“Winterreise” Franz Schubert Opus 89

Concert 2. Wednesday 8th May. 7.00pm. Tickets at ” WINTERREISE” R190 from Quicket

Chris Vale, Baritone and Eugene Joubert ,Piano, perform “Winterreise” , “Winters journey,” by Franz Schubert. The work is a setting of 24 poems by the German poet, Wilhelm Muller. Schubert also set Muller’s poems to his earlier piece, ” Die Schone Mullerin”, Winterise is a very demanding piece emotionally and physically for both performers. Schubert was in very poor health while composing the piece, and realised it would be his last great work, he explores the analogy of winter as the last season in the yearly cycle to his own waning. Winterise is rarely performed, but is a remarkably powerful piece to witness live. Chris Vale and Eugene Joubert’s performances are very rewarding concerts to attend for their powerful interpretation of the work.

“CARLOS V: Music of the Emperor”

Concert 3. Thursday 9th May. 7.30pm. Tickets R190 from Quicket.

Carlos V ( 1506-1555) was a titan of history whose empire bathed in endless sunlight, from the grand halls of Europe to the mystic lands of the Americas. Whilst we think of Renaissance music as being purely European, the conquest of South America resulted in a cross-pollination of cultures with Spanish composers being influenced by the real and imagined rhythms, sounds and languages of South America and West Africa. Our programme presents some of the weird and wonderful music of his time which took instruments and voices to new and previously unexplored territories.
